In the summer of 1958 Robert Godfrey, then of Ockham, Surrey, spent a fortnight’s holiday on the beautiful island of Barra in the Outer Hebrides with his new wife Barbara.

Robert was a keen photographer and had recently won a commendation for a short film he made. While on Barra, where Whisky Galore! had been filmed just nine years earlier, he used his Standard 8mm cine camera to capture local scenes. His film amounts to 21 minutes 30 seconds and clips from it have been used twice on British national television, most recently in a documentary entitled The Boy Who Lived Before, produced by October Films. Robert’s original film has been preserved for the Scottish Screen Archive by the National Library of Scotland.

Below is a selection of frames from Robert’s footage. The film is available as a DVD entitled BARRA – Isle in the West for just £10.00 including UK p&p (for overseas or multiple orders, please enquire). The DVD, with a choice of projector sound or relaxing background music, comes in a standard case with printed artwork and disc, as below. Freda from Falkirk writes: ‘I am thoroughly enjoying the DVD. It captures the essence of Barra perfectly and evokes lovely memories of my time living on the island.’
